What is vestibular nucleus?

The vestibular nucleus is a group of neurons located in the brainstem, in the area between the pons and the medulla oblongata. It receives sensory input from the vestibular system, which is responsible for maintaining balance and detecting changes in head position and movement. The vestibular nucleus is divided into four sub-nuclei: the superior, medial, lateral, and inferior nuclei. Each sub-nucleus processes different types of information related to head position, orientation, and motion. The vestibular nucleus also plays a role in reflexes such as the vestibulo-ocular reflex, which helps maintain visual stability during head movements. Dysfunction of the vestibular nucleus can lead to vertigo, dizziness, motion sickness, and other balance and vestibular disorders.
